Photography

I’ve been dabbling in photography on & off for a few years now, more seriously since I bought a Rebel Xsi. It’s a pretty easy camera to use and I think a good one to cross over from “point and shoot” to DSLR. I still don’t know enough about photography to be amazing at it or anything, but I’m definitely trying to learn. Anyway, here are some photos from my latest shoot with my friend, Amber Brace. Enjoy :)

Friday Favorites: BRAIDS

Is it just me or have braids made a major comeback? Or maybe they never went anywhere, but I was just too lazy to do them? In either case, I’m loving all these braids. Unfortunately, I don’t have the skills to recreate most of these, but they are still pretty to look at...and sometimes attempt. :)

 gorgeous.

Recipe: Apple Chips!

Good afternoon!

From now on I will be posting a yummy recipe every Thursday!  I'm definitely not the greatest cook, but I get by. :)  Plus, cooking for yourself is cheaper and usually healthier than going out.

So, I'm what you would call a "grazer" - I like to snack throughout the day.  I obviously try to keep healthy snacks around, but sometimes it's just a pain and much easier to grab some potato chips or something chocolatey.   My friend sent me this recipe the other day and I think it would be awesome to make these in bulk and keep around in ziplocks for a nice little snack!  Enjoy!

Apple Chips

You need:
4 Apples [really you can use how ever many apples you want!]
1/2 cp. Brown Sugar
1 cp. Water
Cinnamon
Saucepan
Paper towels

1.  Preheat the oven to 250°
2.  First slice up the apples very thin.

3.  In a saucepan dissolve the brown sugar in the water over low heat.
4.  Dunk the apple slices in the brown sugar mixture for at least 30 seconds.  I left mine sitting while I cut up the next apple.

5.  Take the apple slices out and lay them on the paper towel to soak up any excess water.

6.  Arrange the apples on a covered sheet [I recommend spraying it, not just foil!].
7.  This is optional, but then I sprinkled cinnamon and some extra brown sugar on top of my apples.
8.  Put apples in oven and bake for 2-3 hours, or until crispy!  Enjoy!

DIY: Art Wall

Hello lovlies!

Today I thought I would share another home project with you. I have this huge stark white wall in my living room that is just asking for some love and attention. Originally, I had planned on asking my landlord if I could paint it, but then I thought it seemed silly to spend extra time and money on something that I can’t take with me when I move. So, then I decided I would figure out some sort of art piece [or a couple] to take up the space.

After much research, I decided I would just do an interesting photo wall. Pinterest really helped me out on this. :)

In a magazine or somewhere, I can’t remember, I had seen a picture of a wall with lime green empty frames and I was instantly in love. I decided that I liked the more ecclectic/mis-matchy feel, rather then the photos be all lined up and the same. So, I started collecting random frames from our local thrift shop. Super cheap and a great way to get a good mix. Here’s a little walk through and some pictures of what I have done so far.

After I gathered enough frames, I started playing with the layout. First I was doing this on my livingroom floor, but I just couldn’t get it right. You’re probably going to laugh at this next thing, but oh well. I decided to measure all the frames the create a layout in photoshop. :)

It worked really well! After that I laid them out on the floor according to the PS image, to get a better idea of how they worked together. I was happy with it, so then on my PS sheet I assigned a color to each frame, then moved on to spray painting!

First, just let me say I’ve never spray painted anything before, so I was just sort of flying by the seat of my pants. I read a couple online articles about painting frames, then I just got on with it! For the wooden frames I lightly sanded them with 220 grit - lightly! Then I primed them. I also primed all the other dark frames.

After the primer set, I sprayed the frames according to my little cheat sheet. I ended up changing a couple and added a third color, but basically stayed with my originally idea. I had a couple hiccups with little gnats, some drips and some major finger cramps, but all in all it worked pretty well!

Next is hanging them! AHH! Obviously, I wanted to be sure they got up there straight and that the spacing was correct. After thinking on it for awhile I decided to use the ol’ newspaper trick. Basically, you lay out some news paper [or tissue paper, wrapping paper, whatever], lay your frames on top of it then trace them. I even went so far as to figure out about where my nail holes should go. You then tape this masterpiece up on the wall and hammer in all your nails. I hung up the frames once too, just to get a feel for it all.

Now just rip the paper off and ...VOILA! For hanging frames I keep some wall putty on hand in case there are some unruly ones that refuse to sit straight. A little pinch in the corner will work magic!

Isn’t it beauTIful?

The artwork are just different prints I had or printed. I actually created the one with the Incubus lyrics in photoshop with an image I found through google. Fun stuff! :)

If you have an questions on this project or if you have ideas/tips from your own experiences please share them!!

Polka Dots & Buns

Polka dot skirt, thrifted. White top, gifted from Grandma! Shoes, Target.

I’m pretty sure I stole this outfit. I know I’ve seen it before, probably on one of the many fashion bloggers I follow. I checked my favorites and can’t seem to find it. I mean, sure this outfit isn’t ground breaking and I’m sure many others have worn it or something similar. However, I personally was inspired by someone to wear it...and I can’t remember where I saw it! How irritating! Oh well.

How about those shoes? These are the crazy high heels I bought for my friend’s wedding later this month. I will not lie, these are not the least comfortable shoes I’ve worn. :P Always looking for that silver lining! [which these do have!] This outfit did cause quite the ruckus at work today. The office I work in is pretty casual and it seems If you wear anything other than slacks and a sweater it’s a big deal. I don’t like the strange attention, but I do like dressing cute.

So...I guess I’ll just go ahead and rock the boat. If I just keep dressing nicely they’ll get over it sooner or later, right?

Oh, and for the subtle waves I did ...love Maegan’s bun technique. Truth be told, I didn’t watch the video [yet]. I just twisted my wet hair into little buns.

   ...And it worked!

Thrift Finds!

Happy Sunday!  Hope your weekends were swell, mine was!  The boyfriend and I went to pick out pumpkins yesterday and went hiking at a nearby state park.  Tons of fun!

Before I headed out for the weekend I made a quick stop at one of the local secondhand shops.  To be honest, you really have to dig to find nice things, but it can totally pay off.  Look what I found!

I spent a total of $12!  Crazy right?  Okay, the rundown...

Eddie Bauer corduroy jacket - $3 - That was definitely my favorite find.  It's going to be perfect for these cooler fall days we've been having.  Actually, I even wore it yesterday!
Green Merona double layer tee - $3 - I absolutely love this avocado green color!  I also really love the cinched neckline.
liz&co. Polka dot skirt - $3 - This is navy and white if you can't tell.  It also has a little flare ruffle thing at the bottom.  It's super cute!
Merona button up - $3 - Love this!  Really love the fabric, mainly the weight of it.  It feels like it's really gonna hold up.  It's a smidgen on the baggy side, but I plan on styling it similar to some outfits I've seen on Kendi Everday! :)

I'm off to do some Sunday cleaning!  [hopefully...haha!]
